How heat and a loaded coil compound each other
A built-in refrigerator rejects heat by pulling room air across its condenser coil. The hotter the room, the harder that job is — the coil has to work against a smaller temperature difference. Now add a season of household dust, cooking grease and pet hair caked onto the coil, and you've throttled the one path the unit has to dump heat.
On a mild day the compressor just runs a little longer and you never notice. On a 98-degree Dublin afternoon, with the oven on and the kitchen warm, that throttled condenser can't keep up. The unit runs nearly non-stop, the fresh-food side drifts warm, and what looks like a failing refrigerator is often just a coil that can't breathe.
The warning signs before a hot-day failure
There are tells. A condenser fan that's grown louder over the spring. A unit that used to cycle off but now seems to run constantly. Warmth or a faint dusty smell coming off the lower grille. A fresh-food compartment that's fine in the morning and a few degrees warm by dinner on the hottest days.
None of these means the sealed system has failed. More often they mean the condenser is overloaded and the fan motor is tiring. Caught early, it's a cleaning and maybe a fan motor — caught late, after the compressor has spent a summer overheating, it can become a far more expensive sealed-system repair.
The one step that prevents most summer calls
Clean the condenser before summer, every year. On most Dublin built-ins the condenser is behind the lower grille, and a season's worth of dust comes off with the right brush and a vacuum. It's the highest-value preventive task there is for an inland refrigerator, and it's the difference between a quiet July and a warm-fridge emergency in the middle of a heat wave.
